13 years ago, Aberafan's seafront saw a massive regeneration, building modern private housing estates with views across Swansea bay. Now, the Green Sea project will re-design and enhance the sunken garden at Aberafon Seafront to create a high quality seaside garden on one of the finest seafront areas in South Wales.
The project retains the original footprint of the garden as initially designed in the 1950s but through careful design, will provide more shelter and a contemporary feel through the use of granite, stone and stainless steel. Other features of the Sunken Garden include grass terracing and a shingle beach garden, maritime themed garden plantings and timber seating.
The central space within the redesigned garden will be designed
to house a beach wind shelter that will be installed in 2013. The
shelter will reflect its seaside location, with cover from the
elements provided by a wood and steel structure that's inspired by
beach groynes. This will offer convenient seating near the 'shingle
beach garden', a central feature of the gardens which have been a
popular part of the beachfront since the 1950s.
New play facilities
The regeneration of Aberafan Seafront will be further achieved with the development of play facilities for older children and a new refreshment kiosk to be built nearby. The Green Sea programme will also introduce additional signage and interpretation to the beach in order to give tourists more information about the area.
The improvements also include a play area for toddlers, which
has been designed with a seaside theme. The safe-surface play area
is aimed at children between two to five and includes specifically
designed equipment, fencing, seating and access to paths.
What to do in Aberafan
Aberafan's large indoor shopping complex is the only one in Port Talbot. With over sixty stores on two levels and the county's central library it's a fantastic destination for everyone who enjoys their shopping trips.
For more active holidays, there is a chance to learn to surf on Aberavon Beach with SuftGSD. The company is a 4 star approved British Surfing School which offers surfing courses for people of all abilities - so whether you're an absolute beginner or an advanced surfer there is plenty to learn!
Why not take your bicycles along and cycle the Promenade which is part of the National Cycle Network and safe for all levels of cyclists.
A wonderful time can be had beachcombing for shells (see mermaids purses, cockles, dog whelks, razor and oyster shells) and driftwood at Aberafan or take a refreshing swim. Aberafan has been recommended for bathing for the second year running by the Marine Conservation Society in its Good Beach Guide.
Instead of taking a packed lunch, why not wander along the Promenade, and grab some traditional fish and chips with all their vinegary loveliness!
